This presentation will detail progress in the Mellon-funded project at Carnegie Mellon University to offer the first two years of French and Spanish on line. The first-semester French and Spanish courses will be demonstrated and the design process described, including pedagogical framing and technical decisions to develop both WebCT and stand-alone CD-ROM components. Course assessment instruments in use will be discussed in the context of preliminary results from the Spring 2000 pilot offering of Elementary French 1 Online.

Christopher M. Jones is Principal Lecturer in French and Director of the Language Learning Resource Center at Carnegie Mellon University. His time is divided between language courseware development and studies in the area of French culture.

N. Ann Chenoweth is a research scientist in the Department of Modern Languages and the Center for Innovation in Learning at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research focuses on second language writing and course assessment.

Kimmaree Murday is a doctoral candidate in Second Language Acquisition at Carnegie Mellon University. Her primary research interests are in computer-aided language learning, with a focus on evaluation.

Therese Tardio is currently a Ph.D student in the department of Hispanic Languages & Literature at the University in Pittsburgh. She majors in Latin American literature with a minor in sociolinguistics.
