Professional Statement

I attended my first CALICO conference as a graduate student, where I was welcomed into a community of scholars and colleagues that would become my professional home. It is therefore an honor and privilege to be nominated for the position of Vice President of CALICO.

As a regular attendee and presenter at the annual conference, I can attest to the energy and excitement that this professional engagement generates. Attendance at the conference fosters collaboration and innovation, and I see here an opportunity to highlight the outstanding work of conference attendees. As Vice President, I would explore the possibility of introducing a special issue of CALICO Journal to showcase select conference presentations. Early career scholars would be especially encouraged to submit to the special issue.

Equitable access to resources is essential for fostering a vibrant and inclusive community. I propose creating a curated repository of Open Educational Resources (OERs) tailored to the needs of CALL practitioners. These materials, including lesson plans, adaptable digital tools, and research guides, would empower educators to implement cutting-edge CALL practices regardless of their institution’s resources. By drawing on CALICO’s prolific community of scholars, we can ensure these resources reflect the latest advancements and address diverse teaching contexts.

I would additionally champion a comprehensive Environmental Sustainability Plan for CALICO, focusing on carbon offset options for conference attendees. This initiative would allow members to mitigate the environmental impact of conference travel by supporting reforestation, renewable energy projects, or other sustainability measures.

Lastly, I would seek to build partnerships with related organizations, promoting the value of CALL research, and expanding public awareness of CALICO’s contributions to the field.

My vision is to work collaboratively with the executive board to ensure CALICO remains a stable and thriving professional organization while fostering inclusivity, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
